The FactsSo What Do I think?recommended? My ExperiencesExtrasWant to get straight to my thoughts? Then feel free to explore and uncover ‘So what do I think?’ 1 Designer Ignacy Trewiczek 2 Publisher My version is from ZMan games 3 Year Released Originally 2012 4 Players 14 5 Playing Time 60120 minutes 6 Ages 14+ 7 Recommended Retail Price £5499 Components As my game was secondhand and an older version I’m going to pass on talking about the components as I can’t guarantee that the latest version by Portal Games is the same Theme If you’re worried about how you’d cope if ever washed up on some deserted Island then play this game it’ll set you in good stead It throws problems at you like there’s no tomorrow and if you don’t get things right there probably won’t be! All these problems just ooze theme The character skills are appropriate to their background such as the Cook being able to rustle up a meal from out of nowhere or the Explorer being able to recce the area the fact that these skills are driven by det Rules The rules in the Zman edition aren’t great in fact they’re pretty dire indeed but do not fret they’ve been updated in the later versions and now they’re well an improvement but not particularly great either It’s a worker placement game you place a worker you take an action how complicated can it be? The problem is to do with the flow of the rules It should be as simple as here’s the build action put your pawns here and do this this or this But no There’s an overview section Throw away that 300yearold Daniel Defoe 1st edition you have tucked away in a vault play the game instead Robinson Crusoe is a juicy game to play there are a lot of things to consider and plan for and on first encountering it may come across as a little fiddly This is mainly down to the rules which could put some people off as you’ll be diving in pretty regularly whilst learning to play I didn’t find them particularly userfriendly – wordy springs to mind! But and it is a big but it’s most definitely worth the effort If you like a challenge this is the game for you just persevere through the initial games and it all opens up in front of you You’ll gain an insight into things like how to preserve food and just how long it takes to build a roof! It is a worker placement game with tight resource control but you’re not competing to place your pawns in this one you’re cooperating which makes a nice change But of course there are never enough pawns to do everythin Players14 I’ve only ever played solo but I have used a range of characters and would say that 3 is the sweet spot with 4 not far behind I wasn’t a fan of using Friday or the Dog in the 2player or solo made as per the rules I found playing the extra characters instead far more rewarding and fun Playing timeIt’s advertised as 60120minutes but the majority of my games came in at 120+ playing solo I may be more prone to taking my time to think through rounds I’m also not the fastest player in the world anyway so take that into account! Age 12+ If they can handle the complexity let them play there’s a lot that could be learnt from playing this game – prioritising logic risk/reward etc Expect to pay £42 on Chaos Cards Read my thoughts one year on – HERE Official site – Portal Games Recommended video review – The Dice Tower(This is the version I have) Want to learn the rules? – How to play by Watch it Played BoardGameGeek page – HERE.

As a songwriter also He's been for my taste one of the most consisent you know? And he's written so many fantastic tunes And although I'm not anywhere in his league as a singer this song always reminds me of that Smokey type of mood So I dedicate this song to him”” George Harrison.

What The Game Is AboutHow The Game WorksHow’s It Solo?Theme Art & FlavorWhat I LikeWhat I Didn’T LikeExpansionsConclusionIn Robinson Crusoe players use a basic worker placement mechanic try to come up with a plan to survive – and win – any of seven different scenarios that come in the base box Each scenario is very different from the next forcing you to rethink what you know from the previous games One time you’re building a signal fire to attract passing ships in another scenario you’re rescuing a film crew from King Kong or trying to build a home for your family Each player has two pawns that represent the actions your character can do on any given day In the solo game the player pilots two characters (you pick from Explorer Soldier Cook and Carpenter) and has the help from Friday (a native) and the Dog (a dog – surprising right?) Robinson Crusoe is my most played game of 2018 which is no small feat since I only got it late June Of those (at the moment of this writing) 25 plays just 1 was with another player I have found the game extremely hard to teach since the rules are poorly written Apart from that there are just a lot of rules – the Watch It Played rules videotakes just over 45 minutes With a lot of hard to teach rules it’s easy to miss things This does not benefit the play experience Also I had the tendency to alpha game a lot of decisions I didn’t like that and my fellow player visibly didn’t very much care for this game experience too I like this game better solo It gives you optimal control over what you want to do each turn I have been playing with two characters plus Friday and the dog each time but you can also play with one character (or more) You can also remove Friday and/or the dog to up the difficulty There’s tremendous replay value in the base box Robinson Crusoeis ameritrash at its finest Although mechanically it is a worker placement game the game revolves around a highly thematic scenario combined with flavorful survival elements packed into game mechanics It is a game of managing resources planning and taking calculated risks – except it doesn’t feel like that It feels like some lost souls trying their hardest to survive on a cursed island highly thematicvery challenginghigh replay valueengaging and thoughtprovoking a lot of ruleshard to teachcan feel fiddly sometimeshard to get a scenario and all its rules right on the first try Currently there is one big box expansion available Voyages of the Beagle In this multiscenario campaign you aid Charles Darwin in gathering specimen to prove his evolution theory The second expansion is set to release Q1 2019 and is called Mystery Tales In this one you try to survive in the Amazon forest in search of Percy Fawcett the famous explorer who went looking for El Dorado Will you find both him and the mythical city? I currently have neither but I plan on getting both The idea of a campaign within this game’s setting intrigues me with the possibility of offering even more immersion There’s some more small content available on the Portal Games website – new cards characters exploration tokens scenarios and extra options to add to the game I plan to pick some of this up soon at Spellenspektakel You might not think it based on the negatives mentioned above but this game is currently in my top 3 arguably at the number 1 spot (sorry Scythe!) It might be a tough nut to crack at first and even scenarios can easily be misplayed the first time(s) but even bearing those mishaps in mind this game is nothing short of amazing in my mind After 25 plays I still have only won 5 out of the 7 scenarios that come in the base box At Spellenspektakel I am picking up two more scenarios and a new character This game offers so much value for your money I would heartily recommend it to anyone who likes a challenge (but in learning the game and playing the game) and who likes to forget everything around them when they dive into a game Rating ★★★★★.
